Doubling Down with the Derricos
“Doubling Down with the Derricos” was a brand new show premiering on TLC during the pandemic.
The situation:
This was the network’s first Black family of multiples, and the talent had no name recognition as they were a group of unknowns in the public eye.
Although TLC had a devoted audience for similar shows like “19 Kids and Counting” and, in its previous life, “John & Kate Plus 8,” TLC’s primary audience demographic consisted of white women.
Additionally, due to the pandemic, we could not film social media content with the cast in-person. Everything had to be conducted virtually.
The Strategy:
To garner excitement for the premiere of the show, my plan was simple: let the family shine.
I worked directly with the cast to create original content and hand-picked the best clips from the show to promote its premiere.
I researched the times our audiences engaged with similar TLC shows online and directed our marketing department to create engaging graphics for TLC’s official social media accounts.
We also partnered with prominent Black influencers to engage their following and add hype for the show.
Finally, to ensure we were neither pandering nor performative, we hired a respected DEI firm to provide insights into the campaign.
The Results:
Several clips of the show went viral online in anticipation of the premiere, receiving views in the hundreds of thousands to millions.
The pilot episode debuted to an audience of 3 million people, outperforming expectations of similar show premieres with under 1 million viewers.
On the night of the premiere, I tracked the conversation on Twitter (now X):
Total Tweets: 5,000+
Reach: 15.3 million+
Unique Accounts: 2,000+
Comparisons to Similar TLC Shows:
The social conversation around “The Derricos” outperformed a comparable TLC show, “Dragnificent”
Even though “Dragnificent” had influential Drag Queens tweeting about the show, who have large followings, The Derricos held its own
The Derricos significantly outperformed the “Sweet Home Sextuplets” premiere, another family show of “multiples” in the same time slot
“Smothered,” a show with buys supporting it, had slightly less reach overall
This is great considering The Derricos had no buys
Other Insights:
The demographics of tweeting accounts were 71% female (mostly 18-34 age range) and 29% male (also 18-34)
The reception: very positive and excited sentiments toward seeing a Black family on TLC. There were notable positive reactions to a few scenes in the premiere episode, specifically:
Karen teaching the girls that people aren’t allowed to touch their hair
Deon’s at-home barbershop
Deon teaching his kids financial literacy
Deon and Karen being vulnerable about losing their child
